Global growth in mobile barcode usage
Here is a report from 3GVision, the creator of i-nigma barcode scanner, which shows the worldwide growth in mobile barcode usage. The most important facts of the report is the worldwide exponential growth, with Q1/2011 growing by 61.9%  over Q4/2010, and 451% over Q1/2010. Along with that the barcode usage in the US continues to expand also in March to total growth of 181.1% within Q1/2011 compared to Q4/2010.  US scans grow by 630% compared to Q1/2010. QR codes has been introduced to wider audience in the UK and the Netherlandsthanks to brands such as Heineken, SKY Network, Pizza Express, Grazia Magazine, and Gamma DIY shops, who adopted QRcodes during Q1/2011.

Notes on reporting methodology:

-         These reports are based on the total number of QRcode, Datamatrix and UPC/EAN scans recorded by the i-nigma system during the relevant periods. Because of i-nigma’s worldwide prominence, we believe that these numbers are likely to be indicative of global mobile barcode activity

-         The reports do not include activity in Japan, which is known to be well ahead in popularity and usage of mobile barcodes

-         For better representation of global open market trends, the reports specifically exclude activity from i-nigma-based solutions that are used by our vertical customers

-         Top 5 growing countries are from the top 20 countries in mobile barcodes usage during Q1/2011

    You report the growth percentage but do you have a number for users or a percentage of the population that is using QR Codes? Any other demographics such as age?

      Hi Timothy,

      at the moment the smartphone penetration is about 38% of all phones and about 60% of smartphone users are aware of QR code technology and had scanned QR code at least one time. About the half of people who scan QR codes are amo 25-44 age group with women tops men. We will release more detailed reports in future so stay with us.
